Boycott causing Israel ‘problems’
Boycott causing Israel ‘problems’
Aaron Benedek2 May 2009
After Israel’s December-January military assault on Gaza, the global boycott campaign against Israel is starting to have an impact.
Since then, many more trade unions, student organisations and academics from around the globe have signed onto the international campaign to boycott, divest from and sanction Israel (BDS).
Concerned, Israel’s anti-Palestinian and pro-apartheid “union”, Histadrut, is
seeking to develop a multi-national coalition of Zionist-friendly union officials to resist the BDS movement.
The April 27 edition of the Jerusalem Post said the national secretary of the Australian Workers Union, Paul Howes, is one of three union officials worldwide leading this Zionist effort.
On April 24, the three officials announced the launch of a new pro-Zionist group called Trade Unions Linking Israel and Palestine (TULIP).
Approximately fifty Palestinian trade unions have endorsed the BDS campaign against Israel according to the Palestinian website www.stopthewall.org. Evidently, these are not the Palestinian trade unions TULIP aims to “link” with.

SYDNEY -
On April 24, more than 30 organisers and officials from the NSW
Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) heard a presentation on the Palestinian resistance and the growing movement for boycotts, divestments from and sanctions against Israel (BDS). The presentation was given by activists from BDS Sydney and the Gaza Defence Committee.
The president of the construction and general division of the union, Peter McClelland, introduced the presentation. He outlined the CFMEU’s proud record of supporting international struggles for justice such as the East Timorese independence movement and the campaign to overthrow apartheid in South Africa.
The CFMEU also has a position of support for Palestinian self-determination.
The construction and general division of the CFMEU is now considering joining the global BDS campaign against Israel and, if they do, which companies supporting Israel they may target.
Australian academics call for boycott of Israel
Responding to the Call of Palestinian civil society to join the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, we are an Australian campaign focused specifically on a boycott of Israeli academic and cultural institutions, as delineated by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel:
In light of Israel's persistent violations of international law, and given that, since 1948, hundreds of UN resolutions have condemned Israel's colonial and discriminatory policies as illegal and called for immediate, adequate and effective remedies, and given that all forms of international intervention and peace-making have until now failed to convince Israel to comply with humanitarian law, to respect fundamental human rights and to end its occupation and oppression of the people of Palestine, and
In view of the fact that people of conscience in the international community have historically shouldered the moral responsibility to fight injustice, as exemplified in the struggle to abolish apartheid in South Africa through diverse forms of boycott, divestment and sanctions:
We scholars, inspired by the wishes of Palestinian civil society, call upon international civil society organizations and people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to South Africa in the apartheid era. We appeal to you to pressure your respective states to impose embargoes and sanctions against Israel. We also invite conscientious Israelis to support this Call, for the sake of justice and genuine peace...
